Laboratory and Clinical findings of Leprosy in the Settlement Villages


Abstract
Leprosy patients who live in the settlement villages have been treated for a long time.
They may have some complications and trouble in the treatment. We examined the
problems of 471 patients in 5 settlement villages in Kyung Pook province from May to
September 1982 by physical examination, ophthalmological examination and laboratory
tests (DDS in urine and hemoglobin) .
1. Among the total 471 patients, 345(73.2%) were lepromatous leprosy(LL) and the ratio
of LL to non-LL was 2.7 : 1. Number of men(240) and women(231) were nearly the
same.
2. Frequency of age distribution was 5th decade, 6th decade and 7th decade in order.
Males were more in the older group than females.
3. Most of them(94. 5%) have been treated for more than 15 years.
4. Number of patients who had at least one problem in their extremities or face was
333(70%). Number of patients with eye problems were 201 (42.6%) .
5. Number of patients with anemia were 270(57.3%) and more in females than in males.
6. Patients with less than 10¥ìg/ml DDS in urine by Bratton-Marshall melted were 180
(38.2%) and more in males(44.1%) than in females(32.0%).
7. Relapsed patients were 36(7.6%). Females, 24(10%), were more than males, 12(5%).
